Vint Cerf Steps Down as Chairman of ICANN
Vint Cerf who co-invented TCP/IP with Bob Kahn has step down from an unpaid position as Chairman of Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). He is replaced by Peter Dengate Thrush.
We will definitely miss Vint. He has been able to fend off various controversies during his term. One of the main ones is the continued over-site of the Internet by ICANN. Luckily the United States has not lost this over-site. Part of the controversy has to do with why the United States continues to maintain the over-site of the master names list for the Internet. The group should be more international.
Another one is the domain .XXX. Initially it was supported, but support was withdrawn at the last minute by ICANN.
Some other complaints include that ICANN is slow, bureaucratic, and arbitrary.
Vint will devote more time to his duties as a senior executive at Google Inc.
Peter Dengate Thrush will have big shoes to fill. With the tables already set. He has his work cut out for him. The good news is he is from New Zealand, that provides some more of an international presences.
Some other things Dengate Thrush will be faced with is more internationalization of domains, and the inclusion of other languages for domains.
Let us welcome Mr. Dengate Thrush. We wish Mr. Cerf good luck in his future endeavors.
